Susan Boyle on Britain's Got Talent

Les Miserables
As sung by Susan Boyle

The lyrics as performed with omissions noted:

“[Omitted]
There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong
[/Omitted]

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
And they turn your dream to shame

[Omitted]
He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came
[/Omitted]

And still I dream he’ll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I’m living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed.”

My comments:

Reports are that this performance is setting records for numbers of viewers, and understandably so. Not only is her singing voice exceptionable, but her story as presented in the clip is to say the least “a real tear jerker”. Call me an old sentimental fool, just like so many other people, but this performance brings tears to one’s eyes every time it is viewed. You can’t have a heart beating in your chest and not do so.

The whole package; the televised forum, the stage decorations, her off-stage duo of chearleaders, the awed judges and their comments, the audience reactions, the background story, the terrific musical score, herunexpected yet amazing performance and her emotional backstage reaction altogether create a magical series of moments that should live on as a high point of the year 2009.

Why Marriages Fail

Why Marriages Fail

1) Marriage requires compatibility not just at the point of saying ‘I do,’ but across the entire life span.

2) Assuming that marriage implies monogamy, the institution itself is counterintuitive to biology.

3) There is far too much emphasis on ‘weddings’ as opposed to ‘marriages.’

4) Many couples do not know how to fight fairly.

5) Marriages solve problems. (Not)

6) People settle for less than what they want.

7) Couples assume they are immune to reasons 1-6 and believe that hard work isn’t part of the deal. They think that love, sex, children or some combination thereof will be enough.

New Hardware

Ok, a website has been  added with acquisition of a new server "unique2".

  1. dellazoid.homelinux.net = the Dell Inspiron 530, Core 2 Duo, 2.33 GHz, 2 GB ram, 320 GB SATA. This is my main desktop machine. It handles the Dave’s Arch Linux Adoration Page and the Dave’s Blog and gets the most use (rarely boots into XP). No big changes here.
  2. unique2.homelinux.net = a "new to me" HP/Compaq Presario SR1030NX, AMD Athlon XP 3000+, 2.16 GHz, 512 MB ram, 160 GB PATA.  This is my secondary desktop machine.  This serves as a second desktop for the grandkids to play on or for watching videos.  It also has a duplicate of the Slackware Adoration Page website.
  3. unique.homelinux.net = the HP Pavilion XE-743, Intel Pentium III Celeron, 600 MHz, 384 MB ram, 80 GB PATA. This now mostly handles backups but still hosts the Slackware Adoration Page website.  Currently operates headless.

Software user's rights

Software user’s rights

"According to the CONTU Final Report, which is generally interpreted by the courts as legislative history, “the right to add features to the program that were not present at the time of rightful acquisition” falls within the owner’s rights of modification under section 117."

It’s a sad state of affairs when end users have to take software vendors to court in order to keep their freedoms, especially when all they had to do in the first place is chose Linux.
