The One Universal GoogleBook

"As far as I can tell Google caved in to unfair reductions to fair use (bad for the commons), but they gained some good things for Google — and the public readers. In short it was compromise. Should the settlement be approved, it will mean that the vast library of out of print books that Google has been busy digitizing all along will finally reach the web. Hooray!"

Education is important!

I’m so proud tonight.  I have two kids, my son is 22 and my daughter is 25.  So, my son came by and opened a letter that said he passed his GED test with over 3000 points which he says will qualify him for a $25,000 college grant.  This is very good news in itself, but he also asked to take some of my old college books covering mechanics and dynamics and electrical circuits.  Of course, being a protective dad, I warned him that these might be a bit over his head at this point, but he persisted.  Persistance is a good trait, btw.  He also took a couple of books relating to writing that he thought his girlfriend would enjoy.  Boy, the tears started welling up, I was so so proud, I could barely contain my glea.

Now before you start thinking that my daughter is a slacker, I have to tell you that she had her first child at age 18, just 9 months after her mother passed away.  She finished her high school diploma in the same semester that her mother passed away.  This is an achievement that I’m not sure I could have done myself.  She is currently working as a shift leader in a food service career, but I have high hopes for her future, too.  Her mother was in health care, and I think she would do well to consider a career there, but only time will tell.

Yes, only time will tell.
